Stokes Decorators was established in 1920 by the late William Gordon Stokes, who founded the Company after serving in the Welsh Guards in World War I. He established a reputation as a master grainer and artist, working from a showroom in Splott, Cardiff . He also specialised in decorative effects during the 1920s and 1930s, such as sponging, ragging and mural effects, which are still popular today.
After his death in 1952, his son Donald Stokes F.F.O.D. (Fellow of the Faculty of Decoration), became Director and took over the business, forming a Limited Company. Don is an Associate of the Institute of Designers and a former President of the Federation of Painters and Decorators and at 78, is still involved in the Company.
After studying law at the University of Kent at Canterbury , qualifying as a solicitor in 1980 and spending a period in private practice, Donald’s son Simon joined the company in 1984 where he now, as Managing Director, carries on the family tradition.
